THE Y IN CENTRAL MARYLAND
DIVERSITY RECRUITMENT PLATINUM PARTNER
A healthy, positive place to be!Each year, the Y in Central Maryland engages hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life in Y membership and programs which help keep them and their families connected, learning and healthy in every way.
Annually, we raise and invest millions of dollars from individual donors, corporate partners and other funders who believe in the impact of Y work and in our proven ability to tangibly improve both individual and community well-being. Funds raised support thousands of youth, families and individuals throughout central Maryland who experience poverty and need the help of a caring community to keep them connected to healthy community life and properly supported to reach their fullest potential. This includes Y Open Doors financial assistance for those who cannot otherwise afford Y membership, help for children and youth from all backgrounds to attend Y Camp, Preschool and Before and After School programs; support for Y food distribution for those in our community who are food insecure, and so much more.

WHAT WE STAND FOR
AT ITS CORE, THE Y IS A CHANGE-MAKING ORGANIZATION
We meet people where they are and we help them get where they want to go like:
- helping a person learn healthy nutrition and exercise habits that can quite literally lengthen their lives and make them happier
- helping children and adults overcome the barriers imposed by lack of opportunity, inequity, and intolerance so they can reach their fullest potential
- bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to connect and build true community.
We do all of this, and more, at scale, with evidence-based approaches, resources, and a lot of love.
THE Y IS FOR ALL
REFLECTING AND CELEBRATING THE RICH DIVERSITY OF THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE.
More than a glossy, check-a-box-statement, we are committed to inclusivity not only because it’s the right thing to do, we also know that by actively participating in and uplifting a diverse community, we are enriching and improving every aspect of our work.
We do this work with humility, recognizing that we must always first start from within. We invite our stakeholders to join us on this journey and to hold us accountable towards making “For a better us” have real meaning, for all.
VIDEO TOUR
Our SUPERINTENDENT
John Hoey has been the catalyst behind the remarkable turnaround at The Y in Central Maryland since he was named president and CEO in 2006.
“During my tenure, I’m pleased to say the Y has become No. 1 in all of the categories in which we operate,” Hoey said, referring to the Y as largest provider of many services in the region, including early childhood, after school, community schools, mentoring, summer camp and health and wellness. “We have changed by having a relentless focus on quality, the customer experience and the needs of our community.”
When Hoey arrived in 2006, he said market research showed the organization needed a major shakeup. “We have completely rethought and reinvented our brand and now organize around our customers. We have aggressively pursued what I call responsible growth through innovative means for a not-for-profit.”
Hoey said one example of innovation was purchasing two private health clubs and turning them into clubs that are thriving as part of The Y in Central Maryland. “We are invested in our program-member experience and facilities and partnered with private and public entities to get the Y into the community in ways it never was before.”
Under Hoey, the family Y centers have increased from six to 13 and memberships have grown from 60,000 to 300,000. There are about 3,000 employees.
