Quick Info
About University of Utah
The Department of Education, Culture, and Society is one of the top social foundation programs in the country. It is committed to the study and pursuit of social justice in education using cutting-edge frameworks that address class, race, ethnicity, and gender in educational policy and practice. ECS offers Ph.D., M.ED., M.A., and M.S. program specialties in curriculum theory, anthropology, sociology, history, and the philosophy of education. The coursework is designed to help students construct a better understanding of patterns in educational inequality, while countering these inequities by creating an environment where working class students and students of color have, create, and promote equal educational opportunities.
Grad School Programs
Many of our COE programs, such as the teacher education program through the Urban Institute for Teacher Education (UITE), are nationally ranked and/or accredited by national organizations. There are also course offerings of high quality across all departments in the college, which include Education, Culture and Society; Educational Leadership and Policy; Educational Psychology; and Special Education. Depending on a student’s major, there are opportunities to meet degree requirements by taking classes in other university colleges (e.g., Fine Arts, Humanities, Science, and Social and Behavioral Science). These offerings, and the COE faculty’s extensive collaboration with researchers at colleges and universities in Utah and throughout the country, ensure that students will receive an exemplary education to prepare them for careers that will make a difference for children and families in their schools and communities.

The U of U’s teacher education program, in partnership with public education, provides the foundation and experience to work with Utah’s students in communities from urban to rural, across age and ability levels, and from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Because our teacher education program is part of a research university, students will learn from and be challenged by some of the leading educational scholars in the world. Our location in a diverse metropolitan provides excellent opportunities for real-world field experience.
The Ed.D. in K12 Leadership and Policy is designed to provide advanced preparation to individuals with experience working as administrators in K12 public schools, charter schools, or related educational organizations. Based on a model of professional inquiry, the Ed.D. Program emphasizes the use of theory in directing its field-based approach to problem solving. Students will study theory and research in the core domains of organization, leadership, inquiry methods, and in selected areas of specialization. They will use the knowledge gained in these areas of study to frame problems of administrative practice and to seek, critically examine, and apply information to solve problems.
The University of Utah has a comprehensive list of all available scholarships and fellowships available in the Diversity & Equity Office. If you have questions, please contact Anthony Shirley.
Our Diversity
The mission of the UITE is to prepare educators to serve urban students and educational communities in all their rich diversity. We conceive of educational diversity as the dynamic engagement of a range of cultural and urban traditions, including individual differences in ability. In preparing teachers and leaders to work within and across differences, we collaborate with community-based initiatives, seek out community partners, and continually work to discover fresh and innovative ways to approach both curriculum and pedagogy. Our goal is an educational process in which teachers, leaders, and teacher educators draw upon multidisciplinary research and direct urban inquiry to serve all students well. We welcome prospective teachers to this vital, sometimes daunting but always exhilarating, challenge.
