At Curry, we believe in a holistic approach to education. Learners often have needs that cannot be met with just one method. That is why we teach our students to view the learner from various angles, considering emotional, physical, and social needs in addition to intellectual. By offering many areas of study, including counselor education, kinesiology, special education, psychology, gifted education, and more, our students understand how to connect across disciplines and help their future students reach their greatest potential.

Diversity at Curry

The Curry School of Education and Human Development values diversity, equity and inclusion in all of its complexity and richness. We engage our students with multiple perspectives to prepare them to be active agents of change in a complex global society. We intentionally seek opportunities to expand diversity at our school through recruitment, retention, teaching, research and service. Our goal is the development of a community that promotes and values diversity and equity.

Diversity Action Committee

The committee is charged with the coordination and design of diversity-related processes and programs for the school that are consistent with the Curry philosophy on diversity and also integrate principles established by the University. DAC will work closely with the Faculty Council and the Curry Administrative Team to enact Curry’s diversity mission. The key aim of the DAC will be to support interested faculty and staff eager to engage in diversity-related programs and projects, and to promote actions that lead to a culture and atmosphere where all faculty, staff, and students can reach their full potential.

Services & Outreach

We are more than a top-ranked school of education. We’re also a dedicated group of scholars and educators who care about making a difference in our community — right here, right now.

At the Curry School, we’re proud to be a part of the larger UVA, Charlottesville, and Albemarle communities. We aim to give back by connecting our students and faculty directly to the communities that can benefit from their knowledge and service. Here, you will find examples of several of the programs we offer to parents, families, individuals and children in Charlottesville and beyond.

Our Programs

Curriculum and Instruction Design plays a vital role in improving education outcomes for students. At the Curry School, our research and evidence-based approach in the Curriculum and Instruction program ensures our graduates go into the world with the best possible background that empowers them to spearhead improvements in our education system. Graduates of Curry’s highly ranked Curriculum and Instruction program often find meaningful, impactful employment inside the K-12 classroom. Graduates have also gone into higher education, government, educational policy positions, and careers in research. In addition, curriculum development and instruction are needed in all kinds of fields so graduates find ample opportunities in business, the military, and more.

The Curry School of Education and Human Development and the Darden School of Business are partnering to provide studies designed for the next generation of leaders – those who will transform education in the United States and around the world.

Few roles in society provide the reach that educators have into, quite literally, millions of lives. But as the problems in the U.S. and other global education systems mount, they know that more needs to be done to make their reach effective. The Curry School of Education and Human Development and the Darden School of Business are partnering to develop studies designed for the next generation of leaders—those who will innovate and transform education around the world.

Combining theory with practical application, the Ph.D. in Education Curriculum and Instruction program prepares graduates for a range of careers both in and out of academia. This is a research-based, full-time program that is offered in Charlottesville only.

The Ph.D. in Education – Curriculum and Instruction (C&I Ph.D.) is a terminal graduate degree that prepares graduates for positions in university settings (e.g., in research intensive universities, liberal arts colleges, and other post-secondary institutions), school districts, government agencies, and non-governmental agencies (NGOs).

Our Diversity

Though many strides have been made, there is much more work to be done. Our quest is to create and sustain a learning community that purposefully and strategically acknowledges and values diversity, equity and inclusion — and is committed to preparing educators and other professionals who will, through teaching, research and service, contribute to a body of knowledge that will improve outcomes for all learners.
