ABOUT US
Redwood Day is a vibrant K-8 school with over 385 students and 80+ faculty and staff all learning together on our four-acre campus in the heart of Oakland. Everything we do is designed to keep every child engaged and growing. Academically, that means a world-class curriculum, the best teachers, and a focus on the individual student. Socially and emotionally, we teach students to work through challenges, respect each other’s differences, and honor their diverse community. We find great strength in multiple perspectives and embrace every opportunity to weave diversity in thought and action into our social, emotional, and academic lives.
OUR DIVERSITY & EQUITY
Central to Redwood Day is the mission of promoting, exploring, and learning from a diverse and inclusive community. Diversity is considered quantitatively and qualitatively at Redwood Day. This is accomplished at the classroom level, through professional development, in admission and hiring practices, and through the Parent and Guardian Association.
Our mission statement captures the importance of diversity at Redwood Day in three words: “diverse, inclusive community.” We want our community members to develop the habit of trying on others’ worldview, whether in a discussion of US history or during a playground interaction. The result of these interactions is a respect for and an appreciation of difference of all kinds.
TEACHER ASSISTANT PROGRAM
The mission of the Redwood Day Teaching Assistant program is to create a collaborative teaching relationship where both the Mentor and Assistant encourage each other to reflect upon their teaching, create a learning environment that inspires all members and promotes the development of best teaching practices, which will result in a deeper learning experience for our students.
John has written extensively for teachers in training and enjoys every opportunity to help new and veteran teachers hone their craft. He has led many initiatives in schools including those focused on differentiated instruction, curriculum development, faculty professional growth, diversity, social-emotional development, service learning and long-term sustainability.
