Dr. Brenda E. McCartney

ABOUT

Dr. McCartney has over 40 years of experience in education, including 31 years at Garrett County Public Schools (GCPS). She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Fairmont State College (now Fairmont State University), a Master’s Degree from Frostburg State College (now Frostburg State University), and a Doctorate from the University of Maryland. After teaching in WV, she joined GCPS, becoming Assistant Superintendent before retiring in 2007. Dr. McCartney served as an independent consultant for eight years before returning to GCPS as the Interim Superintendent for the 2023-24 school year. She determined her work was not finished and secured a four-year contract as the Superintendent of Schools. 

Dr. McCartney is committed to building strong partnerships by fostering education and collaboration among Garrett County schools, families, and communities. Dr. McCartney’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community has profoundly impacted the district. Through her leadership, she has created an environment where everyone feels valued and respected, including students, parents, staff, and community members. Her dedication to inclusivity has brought people together and helped break down barriers, including implementing an Equity Advisory Board. Dr. McCartney’s efforts have not gone unnoticed, and her inclusive approach has become a model for others to follow. Her work continues to inspire positive change and promote diversity within the district.
