A Word

Superintendent

Excellence – Equity – Effectiveness – Expectations

The purpose of this plan is to create an intentional process that will support me as Superintendent in making Fairfax County Public Schools the premier school system in this country. Understanding what the school system is doing well and exploring what can be improved will lead to opportunities for learning and reflection. This entry plan represents my first step in developing mutual trust and respect with internal and external stakeholders through open and honest communications and positive relationships.

Our practice

Equity and Cultural Responsiveness

As a part of the Office of Professional Learning and Family Engagement, The Equity and Cultural Responsiveness (ECR) team provides division wide support in implementing culturally responsive practices for all stakeholders of Fairfax County Public Schools.

DIVERSITY

In unison with the mission of the Chief Academic and Equity Office, FCPS is dedicated to raising student achievement and eliminating gaps in opportunity and achievement for all students. Serving the diverse perspectives and needs of FCPS, ECR also supports One Fairfax, a county wide commitment to equitable public policy.

Equity & Employee Relations

The Office of Equity and Employee Relations (EER) provides performance management guidance, support and related resources for FCPS principals, administrators, and managers. EER facilitates requests for accommodations based on a qualified disability and provides training and resources to ensure equal opportunity in education and employment.  EER also oversees internal investigations, civil rights compliance, and receives and responds to complaints of sexual misconduct and discrimination.

ONE FAIRFAX (INCLUSION)

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and School Board adopted a joint social and racial equity policy called One Fairfax. The School Board adopted the One Fairfax policy at its meeting on Nov. 20, 2017. The Board of Supervisors adopted One Fairfax at its meeting on Nov. 21.

This joint policy commits both boards to consider equity in decision-making and in the development and delivery of future policies, programs, and services. One Fairfax offers a framework—or “lens”— for the county and schools to look intentionally, comprehensively, and systemically at barriers that may be creating gaps in opportunity.

“Fairness is our shared value as Americans, and every child should have an equitable chance to succeed if they work hard,”said Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova. “Not only does One Fairfax recognize that our commitment to equity is the right thing to do—but it also recognizes that equity is an economic imperative to help every resident thrive.”
