Superintendent Tom Flanagan has led the Burlington School District (BSD) since July 1, 2020. Committed to equity in education, he focuses on addressing historical inequities affecting students of color, those living in poverty, and students with disabilities.

With over two decades in education, Mr. Flanagan has served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, Deputy Chief of Specialized Instruction for DC Public Schools, and Chief Academic Officer for Providence Public Schools. He emphasizes culturally-relevant teaching and family engagement.

Tom is married to educator Amy Simonsen, and they have three daughters attending BSD. Outside of work, he coaches hockey and enjoys snowboarding, running, hiking, and gardening.
