Virginia Education Association (VEA) is pleased to announce the Underrepresented Male Educators (UME) Symposium to be held February 17, 2018 at Virginia State University, 1 Hayden Drive, Petersburg, VA 23806.
The target audience for this day-long gathering includes, but is not limited to high school, undergraduate and graduate students, teacher educators, K-12 and postsecondary administrators, retired educators, human resource personnel, community organizations and policymakers. Participants will engage in a variety of discussions on topics related to recruitment and retention of a diverse teacher workforce, with males of color, in particular.
Symposium highlights include: Friday night welcome event, Virginia State University campus tour, Saturday meet and greet breakfast, Saturday Legacy Luncheon, keynote address, workshops on a variety of topics including mentoring, career paths, sexual harassment, academic support programs, financial planning and more.
There will be vendors, exhibitors and special performances. Special guests include award-winning male educators, and elected officials.
The cost to attend is $60 for VEA/NEA members and NEA affiliate staff; $35 for SVEA and High School students; and $80 for all others. Registration is open through February 5, 2018 or until the symposium fills.
